Throughput of 4.3 million TEUs (20-foot containers) was achieved in Panamanian ports between January and November 2008, but according to Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) projections, 2008 is expected to close with 4.5 million TEUs. The port system mobilized 4 million TEUs in 2007.

Despite of the world financial crisis, nothing has hampered credit approvals for the Panama Canal expansion. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and four other international agencies executed a US$2,300 million loan to the largest infrastructure project underway in Latin America.
